At 26, newly married and in her first trimester, Brooke Thomas went in for a routine checkup and was sent to oncology instead. Doctors told her she had stage 3 melanoma and urged her to end the pregnancy and start chemotherapy right away. When she asked for another way, they cut the cancer out without anesthetic, held her down, and warned her she most likely wouldn't live past 40. Those words stayed with her for about two years.
