The New CHOLESTEROL MEDICATION STUDY Everyone Needs To See A major new randomized statin trial just gave us results that BOTH sides of the cholesterol debate need to hear. The STAREE trial—Statins in Reducing Events in the Elderly—included nearly 10,000 adults age 70 and older without known cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or dementia. Participants received either atorvastatin 40 mg or placebo. The result? Atorvastatin reduced major cardiovascular events by approximately 30% relatively. That's significant. But there was another result that deserves just as much attention: The trial did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in disability-free survival, which included death, dementia, or persistent physical disability.
